Holy Eucharist
In Chapter 6 of John’s record of the Gospel, Jesus says, “Very truly, I tell you, unless you eat the flesh of the Son of Man and drink his blood, you have no life in you. Those who eat my flesh and drink my blood have eternal life, and I will raise them up on the last day; for my flesh is true food and my blood is true drink. Those who eat my flesh and drink my blood abide in me, and I in them…” (Jn 6:53-55)
Jesus says four times in John 6 that we must “eat his flesh and drink his blood” if we are to live eternally with him. He doesn’t mean it figuratively or symbolically. He means it literally! We need Christ’s Supernatural Life in the Eucharist to feed our supernatural life—our SOUL!
Jesus wants us to know, and be comforted by the fact, that we are being nourished and sustained by HIS supernatural life in the Eucharist. Jesus proved by predicting his death, and then rising from it, that he is Eternal. God is the Source of all Life. And just as plants need nourishment from the sun in order to live and thrive, WE need nourishment from God’s Son for our souls to live and thrive. This is why Jesus also says in Chapter 6 of John’s record of the Gospel, “It is the SPIRIT that gives life, the flesh profits nothing…”
“Our flesh” profits nothing, for we know that our bodies will eventually breakdown and die. But the Body and Blood of Christ, his “Spiritual Flesh” was given to us to “Feed our Soul” with his Divine Life.
